HISTORY OF CAMP-LAND RV
Forty-seven years ago, a resourceful "mom" and "dad" searched for an economical way to introduce their four children to the fun and joy of camping. At that time, small pop up tent trailers were the answer. The young family camped many Indiana State Parks in a variety of popup campers. The family of six also traveled to Mexico City in a 16' Shasta travel trailer one Christmas vacation. Two of the four children are now active in the management of CampLand RV.
In those days, a dealer purchased a fold-down camper in a crate and assembled it before it could be sold. Apache was the brand they selected. Three were purchased with the idea that the sale of two would help pay for the third. Upon assembly of the three, Pat and Al Paschen (founders of Camp-Land) found that the demand outstripped the supply, and soon three more Apache campers were on order.
In 1961, the first year in business, what was then known as "Valparaiso Apache Sales" sold 15 campers. In their second year of business the business' name was changed to Camp-Land, and the number of sales grew to over 60.
To meet the growing demand the business moved to Merrillville, Indiana in 1963 where it continued to grow and flourish. The dealership was incorporated, becoming Camp-Land, Inc. At first known mainly as a pop-up camping trailer dealer, Campland Inc gradually gained a reputation as the leading motorhome dealer in NW Indiana. In 1968 it was time for a specially designed RV Dealership building, one of the first in the country. It was constructed on US 30 in Merrillville, where it was a landmark for 30 years.
In 1998 Camp-Land was again expanded and moved, this time to Burns Harbor, Indiana on !-94. The business went from operating on two and a half acres of ground, to a brand new building on a six-acre lot. The extra space permitted more emphasis on travel trailers and fifth wheels. Campland RV is now known as much as a leading travel trailer dealer and 5th wheel dealer as it is for motorhomes and popup trailers. The dealership's market area has expanded beyond NW IN to include the Chicago, Illinois area and SW Michigan.
Then in 2000, the facility was enlarged to twelve acres and the service center expanded to 16 bays. More display area was paved and lighted for motorhomes and campers. RV parts and camping accessory inventories have been expanded. And the selection of pop ups, travel trailers, 5th wheel trailers and toy hauler trailers (SURVs) has been greatly expanded.
